WattStory is committed to the privacy of your personal data and the safeguarding of personal information that (the “Site”) collects. The following policy describes the collection and usage of data by and through the Site.


In order for you to create an account on WattStory and use our services, we need to collect and process certain types of information. This may include:

  • Information such as your name, email and postal addresses, professional affiliations and classifications, telephone number, and country of residence. This information is provided to us when visitors fill out forms on WattStory, including when visitors register as a user of WattStory, subscribe to any newsletters, upload or submit information to the Site, or request any information;
  • Your login and password details, in connection with the account sign up and sign in processes. This may include information we collect from social media sites if you choose to login via their login capabilities;
  • Details of any requests or transactions you make through the Site;
  • Information about your activity on and interaction with WattStory, such as your IP address and the type of device or browser you use;
  • Communications you send to us, including support requests, information requests, questions, comments, or reports of problems; and
  • Information that you submit to WattStory in the form of comments, contributions to discussions, survey submittals, or messages to other users.

Additionally, users who choose to provide WattStory with access to their existing clean energy devices through an Internet connection may provide additional information to WattStory. This may include details about your clean energy system (e.g. solar panels or wind turbines), your monitoring service login information, monitoring service API key, energy meter number, system costs, and related electricity consumption rate.

WattStory uses cookies to allow us to automate access and the data entry functions of our website, tailor our website to your preferences or interests, or customize promotions or marketing. In addition, cookies allow us to track use of our website to determine those areas which are useful or popular and those that are not thereby enabling us to improve and update our website effectively. In general, this aggregate information will not identify you personally unless correlated with other personally identifying information. Most web browsers can either alert you to the use of cookies or refuse to accept cookies entirely. You should be aware that if you elect not to accept cookies, some parts of the Site may not function properly or permit access.

To modify or delete the personal information you have provided to us, please log in and update your profile. We may retain certain information as required by law or for necessary business purposes.

When you create an account, we create a basic profile page for you on WattStory, containing your account name, the date the account was created, and a list of stories and/or clean energy systems you follow or own. Whenever your account name appears on WattStory (for instance, when you post comments, send messages, or support projects), people can click your account name to see your profile. The profile is not searchable on WattStory or via search engines like Google. Here are some of the things that will be publicly viewable on your profile, or elsewhere on WattStory:

  • Your account name, and the date is was created;
  • Any information you choose to add to your profile (for example, pictures, a bio, or your location);
  • Stories and clean energy systems you follow;
  • Stories and clean energy systems you created, own, or manage;
  • Users you follow; and
  • Any comments you have posted on WattStory;

Please note that each system page and story lists the community of users who are following it. If you do not want others to see your name associated with a system or story, choose an account name that is not identifiable.

Please note that any information or images which you choose to upload, post or communicate via the Services to public areas of the Site may be viewed by all users and visitors of the Site, and may also be "shared" by you and any of our other users through additional social networks, such as Facebook. Please be aware that such content shall be considered public information, is not subject to this privacy policy, and should have no expectation of privacy in regards to it. Therefore, we urge you to not publicly communicate any private information you do not want made public.


WattStory may offer links from our website to other websites which may be hosted by our partners or by unrelated companies which we think may be of interest to you. This Privacy Policy does not govern such websites, and WattStory makes no representation as to their practices for dealing with your personal information. We recommend that you check the privacy policy of any website at the beginning of your visit.

We do not give your personal information to any third-party services, except when it is necessary to work with a WattStory service provider or vendor and we have received your consent (for example, if a user asks us to put them in touch with a clean energy technology installer or developer). When we share data with third-party services that support our delivery of WattStory Services, we require that they protect your personal information to the same standards we do.


The Site will use the personal information you provide to:

  • Identify you when you sign in to your account;
  • Enable us to provide you with the Services;
  • Send you marketing communications we think you may find useful, but only in accordance with your email preferences, which are subject to your change;
  • Send you stories and updates on the projects and systems of other WattStory users (this may be affected by your previous use of the site, geographic location, other preferences);
  • Administer your account with us;
  • Analyze the use of the Services and the people visiting to improve our content and Services; and
  • Other purposes that we may disclose to you when we request your information.

WattStory takes securing your data and preserving your privacy very seriously. We never post anything to your Facebook, Twitter, or other third-party accounts without your permission. WattStory users never receive access to connected clean energy system identifiers or any information that could be used to access connected systems without the consent of the owners. We do not and will not sell your data.


We want to communicate with you only if you want to hear from us. We try to keep emails to a minimum and give you the ability to opt out of any marketing communications we send. We will send you email relating to verifications of certain Site activities (for example, requesting to be put in touch with an installer in your area, or a confirmation of Site registration). You will also receive certain marketing email communications, in accordance with your preferences, and from which you may opt out at any time. We may send you service-related announcements on the rare occasions when it is necessary to do so.


WattStory takes reasonable technical and organizational measures to guard against unauthorized or unlawful processing of the information collected and against accidental loss or destruction of, or damage to, your personal data. While no system is completely secure, we believe the measures implemented by our site reduce the likelihood of security problems to a level appropriate to the type of data involved.

In addition, we recommend that you do your part in protecting yourself from unauthorized access to your account by ensuring no one else uses your computer when you are logged in, by logging off from the site when it is not in use and by keeping your password confidential.


Information that you submit through WattStory may be transferred to countries other than where you reside (for example, to our servers in the United States). We will protect all information we receive in accordance with this privacy policy.


We may change the terms of this Privacy Policy from time to time in order to reflect our practices and provide greater protection for your information. Information collected by us will be dealt with in accordance with the provisions of our policy, which were in effect at the time of collection.


By using our Services and accessing our Site you are consenting to the practices relating to information collection and use that are described in this privacy policy.
